“The German didn’t pull the trigger.” I think this is significant because during those times, the Germans always pulled the trigger, they were trying to take over the world and very easy could have took both of their lives. I think it’s unbelivable that the German man just nodded. Also very intriguing that they ended up being able to meet eachother.

“His would be executioner”. To me those words could hit deep to a man with a family. The two men where really courageous and when they meet off the battle filed they where in tears.

” the German didn’t pull the trigger, he nodded at brown instead.” I think this is significant because the German could have pulled the trigger and we would have Never heard of this story. That one decision that had saved lives and made others bond.

I think it would be in the middle of a war people still have peace with others and that there willing to share it. This is incredible because of it shows no matter what people are going through were all still people and can live like normal people in a normal place. People are always amazing is what I take away from this.

“You follow the rules of war for you — not your enemy. You fight by rules to keep your humanity.” I really really think this is a great quote and should be told to lots of soldiers

“The code is there to protect the ones fighting.” The code is in place to help the soldiers keep their humanity in war.

“You follow the rules of war for you — not your enemy. You fight by rules to keep your humanity.” The way they explain this is the article to me is that you are at war but it is still a fair fight. If a man is down don’t kick him.

“In 1940, I lost my only brother as a night fighter. On the 20th of December, 4 days before Christmas, I had the chance to save a B-17 from her destruction, a plane so badly damaged it was a wonder that she was still flying.” Sparing someone’s life can effect how you live, it makes you think that if you didn’t spare their life what would’ve happened to them?

“There is something worse than death, and one of those things is to completely lose your humanity.” It’s significant because if you lose all your compassion what exactly do you have left? if you can’t be a decent human being that’s worst than death. You’re supposed to be compassionate for other people and if you can’t do that while being here what’s the point?

The quote that I liked the best was. “In many ways, a soldier feels more of a bond with the enemy they’re fighting than with the countrymen back home. The enemy they’re fighting is equally risking death.” To me this means that the two enemies that are fighting are closer together than with the people that they know from back at their home town.

“In many ways, a soldier feels more of a bond with the enemy they’re fighting than with the countrymen back home. The enemy they’re fighting is equally risking death.” I like this quote because it really speaks about how and why one would or should be merciful to their enemy in certain circumstances.

“There is something worse than death, and one of those things is to completely lose your humanity.” I think this is very deep, and yet subtle. It’s compltetly true.

“Their enemies joined in. By morning, soldiers on both sides had climbed out of their trenches and were playing soccer and exchanging gifts ” they are enemies and they are acting as if their close friends

“In a much more profound sense, the rules are there to protect the people doing the actual fighting.”

This quotation I must say leaves the greatest impact upon me. In the sense that warriors must protect themselves from the raging bloodlust within them. Too many times has this code been broken, and yet it continues to. Although the code is meant to protect those in which that have lost, the code in my opinion is a way of protecting those that have lost. It is a code of honor.

“The code is designed to protect the victor, as well as the vanquished”
This quote stuck out to me because it means that both warriors know that they are both human beings and need to have respect for each other.

I think personally that the biggest meaning to be of the title is that everyone can keep their humanity. But in war it is a choice you make wether or not you will stay true and loyal to your morals. This speaks to me mostly because I have a large amount of family in various military branches. It is heart warming to see that not all the men and women we see as enemies are as cold hearted as we preceive them to be.

“You follow the rules of war for you — not your enemy. You fight by rules to keep your humanity.” I like this quote because in our human nature we don’t fight or do things for people we dislike, we do it for ourselves.

“Brown had written a letter of thanks to Stigler, but one day, he showed the extent of his gratitude. He organized a reunion of his surviving crew members, along with their extended families. He invited Stigler as a guest of honor.” This is significant because it shows respect towards each other, though enemies many years ago now great friends due to one simple encounter.

  19. Chris said

“Stigler escorted the bomber over the North Sea and took one last look at the American pilot. Then he saluted him, peeled his fighter away and returned to Germany.”
I think that stigler had real courage to see the enemy already going through problems and helped them knowing that he would be killed if anyone found out.

“There is something worse than death, and one of those things is to completely lose your humanity.” I agree with this quote. If you lose your humanity, you’re putting someone else in danger. We have to, at some point, know that we are all humans and there’s a certain way to treat a human regardless of the consequences.

The quote ‘Thousands of U.S. soldiers returning from wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder”, is signifacent to me because I have many family members who have gone over seas. Not all of them came back with ptsd, but the ones that did have ptsd you had to watch what you said/ did around them. It wa very life changing for me because this tought me that being a solider is not always the best thing.

  22. Hayden Heigele said

“My God, this is a nightmare,” the co-pilot said.”He’s going to destroy us,” the pilot agreed.

I read the whole article. This line is significant to me because it reminds me of a song I used to listen to quite frequently 8 November by big and Rich, about soldiers going into a large battle in Vietnam, knowing that they were not going to make it out They got ambushed, and then the song talked about how it affected the rest of their families

  23. KL2hour said

“When they found each other, they found peace.” This is significant to me because, I have found the people that make me feel at peace.

  24. LM6 said

“When they found each other that found peace.” I found this quote significant to me because finding the right people in life you can feel peace on earth.

  25. Kd2 said

“My God, this is a nightmare.” This one stuck out to me, I know it’s really early, and the story of how the enemy pilot led them back to England was cool. I thought that one sentence was significant because some people don’t realize what people sarcrafise and just how lucky they are to live here. Some people don’t realize what soldiers have been through, how close to deaths they’ve come, and what they have seen. Like he said it was a nightmare, and that day there was a mirical.

  26. Jv2 said

“My God, this is a nightmare,” This is a significant quote because somethings are just bad that you can’t forget. I tend to remember the worst things that happened in my life then the not so much important things and it will stick us forever no matter what else happen.

  27. seth h said

“The code is designed to protect the victor, as well as the vanquished” This quote is significant because both warriors see fear in each others eyes and also see they are both living beings, and respect is needed.

  28. Ty1 said

“Stigler wasn’t just motivated by vengeance that day. He also lived by a code.” This quote showed me that stigler didn’t lose his humanity even after the tragic loss of his brother. He still showed them mercy even though they were bombing his countries city’s.
